Complete self-reliance in the defense sector! Government aims to increase defense exports 20 times by 2047

New Delhi. The Ministry of Defense has set a target under Self-reliant India that by the time India enters its 100th year of independence in the year 2047, defense exports will increase to Rs 2.6 lakh crore. Top sources told News18 that the government has also set a target of complete indigenization and self-reliance in the defense sector. Under the vision @ 2047 of the Narendra Modi government, a meeting was held on Friday under the chairmanship of Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on the goals of the year 2047. During this, a target was also set to add 45,000 companies of the Micro, Small and Medium (MSME) category in the defense sector, which is currently 15,000. Government sources said that discussions were held with the Defense Minister on increasing India’s share in the space economy from the current 2 percent to 15 percent by 2047. India aims to become a $1 trillion market by 2047.
Additional Secretary (Defence Production) Sanjay Jaju said that in 2020-21, India’s defense export was Rs 13,000 crore, which is the highest. According to sources, it is to be increased 20 times to Rs 2.6 lakh crore by 2047. Increasing defense exports is the top priority of the government. The government is working on taking defense exports from Rs 35,000 crore to Rs 40,000 crore by 2024-25. In this, the export of Light Combat Aircraft Tejas and BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is expected to help a lot. Many countries have shown interest in buying them.

India is looking at exporting advanced light Mark III helicopters to the Philippines and Tejas to Malaysia. The talks between the two countries are in the advanced stage. Sources had earlier told News18 that India has also offered to set up a production line to manufacture Tejas and helicopters in Egypt. There are plans to explore the African market as well. India recently signed a $375 million deal for the supply of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to the Philippines. Talks can be made about Brahmos from Indonesia too. The Defense Ministry is also working on a Defense Production and Export Promotion Policy, which is said to be in its final stages.

The Modi government has prepared a big roadmap for the 100th year of India’s independence i.e. 2047. Under this, ten regional groups of secretaries have been formed to work on all sectors. These groups are preparing goals and roadmaps that are to be achieved by 2047. One of these groups also deals with security and foreign affairs. According to Defense Ministry data, Indian defense exports have grown six times from Rs 1,500 crore to Rs 9,000 crore in the last five years. The participation of the private sector in this is 90 percent. Under this, roughly 84 countries are being exported. The 2020 report of Stockholm-based International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) shows that India has come in the list of top 25 countries in defense exports.
